Since the establishment of Hunan Opera Cultural Ecology Conservation (Experimental) Zone, Linwu has forged ahead to revitalize traditional opera and carry forward the basic national spirit by adhering to cultural confidence, creative inheritance and innovative development.

There are more than 10 types of operas in Linwu, including Nuo Opera, Qi Opera and Huadeng Popular Tune. Many of them sustain the test of time and become more vigorous today.

In recent years, the local government has attached great importance to the historical and cultural development of traditional operas and considered the diversified traditional operas with distinctive features as the foundation of historical and spiritual culture.

By integrating the inheritance and protection of opera culture with the charm of the ancient county and its modern image, the cultural tourism brand of “thousand-year-old county” and the development and planning of cultural tourism, Linwu County has seen the development of opera culture in an all-round way, with opera performance being more well-received, promoted and spread and the opera being respected, studied and inherited thanks to sufficient input of material resources, manpower, finance, etc.

Wu Zejun, a researcher of Linwu Opera culture, said that more parents are encouraging their children to learn Linwu traditional operas. Six sessions of children opera training have been held over these years, including the Youth Class of Nuo Opera, the Youth Class of Qi Opera, with about two or three hundred students participating in the training.

Meanwhile, according to the characteristics of children, the training schools and opera troupes also had a rehearsal of Nuo Opera and Qi Opera programs designed for children, providing many platforms and means to enrich children’s art life.

Over the past few years, Linwu County has made new achievements in opera inheritance and innovation to keep pace with modern development, like new works of Qi Opera “Ode to Qin Pond” and “Liyuanchun”.

New programs of Huadeng Popular Tune such as “the Couple Go to Town”, “Li Qiang’s Marriage” and “Grateful to Families and Communist Party of China” have won prizes in many provincial and municipal shows, and have also been put on as artistic performances designed for foreign exchanges.

The cultural ecology of Linwu Opera, with a time-honored historical background and profound social foundation, fully manifests the spirit of the local people.

Over these years, many opera troupes at community levels have braved the relatively tough conditions. However, they have been sticking to traditional art, showing their social responsibilities to inherit the national spirit.
